Limit sex offenders

I am a Wichita native now living in Olathe. We recently discovered a convicted child-sex offender living 208 feet from our elementary school, completely unsupervised by the Kansas Department of Corrections — long story. We have received media attention in Johnson County regarding our plight.

Kansas does not have laws against child-sex offenders that limit their access to schools, parks, children's sporting events, etc. Kansas forbids local governments from placing their own ordinances against offenders. Most Kansans, including elected officials, aren't even aware of it.

A few years ago a bill was investigated and defeated by the previous governor and law enforcement agencies. This lack of law affects every Kansan.

Considering Wichita has far more child-sex offenders on the registry than Johnson County, I am scared for my family there. State Rep. Rob Olson, R-Olathe, is writing a bill for the next legislative session. We all need to write our city council members and Senate and House representatives, and implore them to support this bill.
